On March 10th, I stood alongside state legislators in Albany, the dedicated team at Common Sense Media, and the colleagues who authored the legislation to advocate for the digital safety of our youth.
As a child and adolescent psychologist, I see the frightening impact of unregulated tech every day. What I learned and witnessed in Albany gave me hope for our children, our families, and our future.
Today, I am urging you to take two simple steps that will make a direct, positive impact on what is already incredible legislative momentum. Your actions will help successfully propel us forward locally in NY and set us up for significant wins in other states. These actions can combat the “learned helplessness” many of us feel when facing big tech companies.
Action Item #1: Financially Support THE TEAM Leading the Charge
Common Sense Media is the primary advocacy and lobbying group responsible for the legislative wins we’ve seen in the last three years. They are an astonishingly focused team, but they are currently under-resourced for the fight ahead.
In my meetings with them in Albany, I was struck by their competency and singular focus. They are truly in this fight to win on behalf of all our children. To continue their work in New York and scale this impact globally, they need resources that match their mission. Please consider donating to them; there are few causes more vital right now. I assure you, your contribution will make a difference.
In just the last three years, this coalition, with Common Sense Media leading the charge, has created state-level momentum and successfully passed:
- The SAFE for Kids Act: A landmark law tackling addictive algorithmic feeds. By forcing tech giants to change their interfaces for the NY market, they are setting a precedent for the entire country.
- The NY Child Data Privacy Protection Act: Establishes “Privacy by Default,” making it illegal for apps to track or sell the personal data of anyone under 18.
- The Social Media Warning Label Act: Requires clear, persistent mental health warnings on addictive platforms—similar to those found on tobacco products.
- The Bell-to-Bell Phone Ban: Common Sense Media was integral in pushing for distraction-free school zones, helping our kids reclaim their focus during the school day.
Common Sense Media has released its 2026 Legislative Priorities, and it is truly impressive! Read it here. There are 10 bills covering topics ranging from blocking online predators and battling addictive algorithms to imposing liability for AI mental health impersonation.
Please read through these priorities carefully. Common Sense has the relationships in Albany, a track record of success, and the backing of Senators and Attorney General Letitia James. The many legislators I spoke to directly are hugely in favor of these bills. By voting “Yes,” they become our heroes—and Common Sense Media is the command center making it possible.
Action Item #2: Call Your Representatives
These bills are set for a pivotal budget vote on April 1st. There is a narrow window to ensure they are fully funded and passed.

What to do: Call your local State Senator and Assembly Member. A 30-second message stating, “I am a constituent and a [parent/professional], and I urge you to support [Insert Name of Bill from the Common Sense Media Document]” makes a documented, significant impact.

Yesterday, I left Albany with a feeling of hope. For the first time in a generation, we are winning these battles and have real heroes dedicated to the fight. Please join us and be a hero, too.
