Dr. Blaise Aguirre, MD Caring for a Suicidal Adolescent for Parents, School Personnel & Clinicians

On September 16th, in honor of National Suicide Prevention Month, Dr. Blaise Aguirre, MD, a renowned expert in the treatment of suicidal behavior in adolescents, will provide education and insight into what care givers, teachers, counselors, therapists or anyone of us can do when faced with a suicidal adolescent.

Education and spreading awareness are necessary first steps towards tackling this domestic and global travesty. In the US alone, an average of 123 suicides occur each day. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Burden of Disease study estimate that almost 800,000 people die from suicide each year - that is one person every 40 seconds. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in America, the second leading cause for ages 25-34, and the third leading for ages 15-24. In a special survey, the CDC reported that in May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, emergency room visits for suicide attempts increased among adolescents aged 12–17 years, highest amongst girls. Suicide attempt visits were an astonishing 50.6% higher among girls aged 12–17 years from February 21 to March 20, 2021, then during the same period a year prior. Amongst boys ages 12–17, suspected suicide attempt emergency room visits increased 3.7%.

In this essential webinar, entitled "Caring for a Suicidal Adolescent: A Live Webinar for Parents, School Personnel & Clinicians", Dr. Blaise Aguirre will cover the following learning objectives:

1. Recognize the epidemiology and seriousness of suicide in adolescents.
2. Understand some of the myths around suicide awareness.
3. Develop and reinforce ideas about what is helpful and what is not in caring for a suicidal adolescent.

Instructor | Blaise Aguirre, MD, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist. He is a trainer in, and specializes in, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as well as other treatments for borderline personality disorder and associated conditions. He is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is the founding medical director of 3East continuum of care, an array of programs for teens that uses DBT to target self-endangering behaviors as well as the symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) traits. Dr. Aguirre has been a staff psychiatrist at McLean Hospital since 2000 and is nationally and internationally recognized for his extensive work in the treatment of mood and personality disorders in adolescents. He lectures regularly throughout the world.

Dr. Aguirre is the author or co-author of many books including Borderline Personality Disorder in Adolescents, Mindfulness for Borderline Personality Disorder, and DBT For Dummies.

Our Intention. 100% of your registration cost ($30) will be directed to support DBT-LBC, a non-profit and mostly volunteer agency, whose members work tirelessly to educate, promote awareness of standardized DBT treatment for suicide, increase affordability and availability of standardized DBT and make inroads at state legislative levels. DBT-LBC also provides scholarships to clinicians, agencies and programs needing help with certification costs. There are decades of research demonstrating DBT as a gold standard treatment for those struggling with chronic suicidal thoughts, feelings, and behaviors for all ages. Still, affordable, and standardized DBT is hard to find, as there are not enough therapists providing comprehensive and standardized DBT. The overarching aim of the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification is to provide to the public at large and to relevant stakeholders a source that identifies providers and programs that have gone through a rigorous process to become certified based on the high standards patterned after the evidenced based model.

CEUs. CEs from NBCC will be offered through one of our sponsors, Portland DBT Institute. Participants will receive 1 CE for attending this presentation. In order to receive CE credit, you must attend the webinar live.

Understanding Self Injury For Parents & Front-Line Professionals by Dr. Michael Hollander - Self-Harm Awareness Month - March 4th, 2022 at 12PM EST 1 CEU

Parents, educators, and all-front line professionals! Tune into a live stream webinar from an internationally renowned expert on self-injury within the family system, Dr. Michael Hollander, on March 4th, 2022 at 12PM Eastern Standard Time. Dr. Hollander will present critical education and practical advice during this live streaming event entitled, "Understanding Self-Injury: A Live Webinar for Parents & Front-Line Workers.”

REGISTER HERE

This webinar is in honor of Self-Harm Awareness Month. Sadly, adolescents have the highest rate of self-injurious behaviors compared to other demographic groups and 17% admit to self-injury at least once in their lifetime. The average age of a first incident is 13 years old. This phenomenon is perplexing and worrisome for all of us who work with adolescents. The behavior can come out of nowhere and sometimes be hidden from trusted adults for months or years.

Dr. Hollander is nationally recognized as an expert on the etiology and treatment of self-injury and regularly lectures. He has treated adolescents and their families for over 40 years and held numerous positions of clinical leadership at McLean Hospital. He is co-founder of McLean's 3East Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program, which provides exceptional consultation to patients, families, and staff. Dr. Hollander was awarded an Endowed Directorship at McLean. In addition, Dr. Hollander supervised within McLean’s Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) clinic and supervised within the Behavioral and Research Training Clinic at the University of Washington. He is on the faculty of the McLean/Massachusetts General child psychiatry fellowship program and was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1998. Currently, Dr. Hollander is Co-Director of Boston Child Study Center-Maine where he provides supervision and clinical care. He is a DBT trainer for Behavioral Tech and travels around the world to train clinicians.

Dr. Hollander is generously directing 100% of the registration price to DBT-LBC in support of their mission, originally developed and carried out by Dr. Marsha Linehan, the developer of DBT.  DBT-LBC is a non-profit and mostly volunteer agency, whose members tirelessly work to increase awareness, affordability, and availability of comprehensive and standardized DBT.  DBT was developed solely to treat and prevent suicidal behaviors, as well as to help families directly impacted by suicidal behaviors. Members of DBT-LBC push for change at the state legislative level in hopes that private insurers and Medicaid providers increase treatment availability within networks, raise reimbursement rates for comprehensive care and increase ease of coverage for those seeking comprehensive treatment. Scholarships for clinicians, agencies, and programs needing help with certification costs are also available and funded by DBT-LBC. Decades of research support DBT as a gold standard treatment for those struggling with chronic suicidal thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT-LBC, the certifying body, exists for the purpose of maintaining the highest standards and adherence to the research model, ensuring the consumer has the best chance of success and recovery.

Along with BHBA, this webinar is supported by DBT practices, Peachtree DBT, Rathbone & Associates, & Cincinnati Center for DBT.

CEU: The co-sponsor for this event, Portland DBT Institute, will issue 1 CE credit through the National Board for Certified Counselors. This webinar will be recorded and will be available for viewing after the live stream. You will obtain a password and can view it for 30 days. However, you must attend the webinar in live stream in order to receive your CE credit. Click here to read about the Portland DBT Institute.

Essential Recommendations from a Crash Course on Suicide Prevention Presented by Dr. David Jobes on World Suicide Prevention Day

I am beyond grateful to you all for holding space with me during September, Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month. And thank you for your support of Dr. Jobes's webinar on World Suicide Prevention Day.

After hearing from Dr. Jobes that 12 million people around the world suffer from suicidal ideation and that "there will never be enough therapists to help", I felt determined to gather inexpensive and not too time-consuming training opportunities. Some listed below are available to anyone and some are for mental health care workers. Suicide is treatable and preventable if those who suffer get connected. We must pool and share information, and teach and support each other in order to gain any ground.

*Disclaimer: Neither BHBA nor I, have any financial relationship to any entity listed in this email and receive no compensation or financial gain from purchases made subsequent to reading this newsletter.

Dr. Jobes critiqued DBT as being labor-intensive, time-consuming, and expensive to learn and master for the therapist. This is an important and fair criticism. The problem of suicide is growing exponentially and interventions are needed quickly. If you are interested in learning DBT but believe there are too many obstacles, please email me. Let's start a conversation!

In light of this, I hope some of you were inspired by Dr. Jobes to seek CAMS training. The full training protocol is not very time-consuming and costs under $500. Click here for more information.

There is another exciting training opportunity for everyone that is not very time-consuming and only costs $30! Click here to read about QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). The developers believe that because suicide happens in families, "at least one person per family unit should be trained in QPR". Imagine feeling more equipped at home! They also provide training for school employees, corporations, and essential workers. Pass this training along far and wide.

The National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEABPD) offers six 20-minute training videos for free on their website. Click here to access them. The comprehensive video series can be rented for $20. The NEABPD is dedicated to providing resources for families of loved ones suffering from borderline personality disorder and has useful information for anyone navigating life with a suicidal person, no matter what their diagnosis.

The Center for Practice Innovations offers free training on their website on safety planning and suicide assessment using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSRS). Please click here for the link. They train all essential workers who work within the NYS office of mental health.

Next week, the NYS office of mental health is hosting a free 3-day virtual symposium for their AIM for Zero Suicide Care initiative. Click here to read about their streaming event and register. They rely on the AIM model developed by researchers at Columbia University. Click here for more detailed information on this state-wide initiative.

The Zero Suicide Care initiative is global. Their website is comprehensive and provides free training on the CSSRS and other resources. Click here for more information.

The UPenn Center for Prevention of Suicide offers training for CBT for suicide from the developers. Click here for more information.

Dr. Jobes emphasized that assessment is the first line of defense, as well as ongoing assessment, rather than relying on clinical judgment. Our team is set to replace a laborious assessment tool with one he recommends, the Ask Suicide Questions ASQ. This is a valuable assessment tool any care professional can use and is free.

Next week I will send a newsletter with resources for family members for suicide prevention, hotline numbers, education, etc. This post will reside on my website (along with all of my content) for future and quick reference.

Thank you all again for your commitment and collaboration to combat this terrible and global epidemic, and please connect with me if you have resources to share.
